George Shartouni says: The last name Chartouni possibly originated as follows. The Chartounis are from a town in Lebanon called Chartoun. At one point before or after the Abi Naders (Abi Nader is the original last name of most of the Chartounis...anothr story for another day), it is told that a man lived in the town who was very cruel and brutal. People feared him and tried to avoid his wrath. "Char" means "the evil of" , "toun" was possibly his name or some abbrevation of it. I was told this story by my father who grew up in Chartoun. He also told me that they are not 100% sure of the story.
