Name:Navneet
Gender:Masculine
Location:India
Language:Hindu
Origin: sanskrit word "Navneetham"
Meaning: "home made butter"
Comments: is derived from a Sanskrit word 'Navneetham', which means 'Makkhan' (or 'Maakhan') in Hindi. 'Makkhan' essentially is home made butter. Other spelling for this name is 'Navnit'. 'Navneet' is often confused with 'Naveen' or 'Navin', which means 'new'.
References to 'Navneetham' can be found in Hindu Mythology about 'Lord Krishna', a Hndu deity and one of the nine avataars of 'Lord Vishnu', who was very fond of it and in his child hood would steal the same, normally stored in an earthen pot called 'haandi', not only from his own home but the entire town. The community starting hanging the finished 'Navneetham haandi' higher up from the ground level. 'Lord Krishna' as a child would then gather a team of his friends and form a human pyramid to reach the 'haandi' and break it open for his and his teams' consumption. This earned him the nickname of 'Maakhan Chor' or 'Maakhan' thief. No such 'haandis' were safe in the town. When caught, the community members would complain of the same to his caretaker mother 'Yashoda' but 'Lord Krishna' would put an innocent face and claim 'Maiya mori, main nahin maakhan khayo', which mean 'My mother, *I* did not eat Makkhan'. The loving mother would forgive him each time despite being aware of his such escapades.
The act of forming the human pyramid to reach the 'Makkhan' by 'Lord Krishna' and his team is celebrated till date as a Hindu festival called 'Janamashtmi' or 'Gokulashtami'. This festival is celebrated in Maharashtra, especially Mumbai with much fanfare. There are professional teams who form the human pyramids to reach such 'haandi' hanging even as high as 50-70 feet. Certain communal bodies organise local events and invite such professional teams to reach the 'haandi' and break it open. Each team is given 3 attempts to achieve the mean task and the winning team walks away with the booty as high as 10 Lacs INR (about 23000 USD).
