Ivan II Zrno says: First written mention of Zrno Family name dates from 1721. Roman Catholic priest Grgur Zrno administered the local Church of the southern Livno Field (in present day Bosnia and Herzegovina), celebrating liturgy on Old Church Slavonic. In 1743 family of Mihael Zrno (Michael Zarnich) numbered 24 household members in the village named Missi (Miši) near Livno (Bosnia and Herzegovina). The Family moved during 18th century to the north, firstly in Duvno (Tomislavgrad) and subsequently to Šuica where most of the members of this genus have remained for a long time. Until 20th century, both versions of the surname are used at the same time : Zrno and Zrnić. But gradually the form Zrno will prevail in the south, and Zrnić in the north.
Ivan II Zrno says: The surname Zirno (for which Croatian linguists consider to correspond to today's surname Zrno) appears twice in written documents between 1020 and 1060 from Split (Spalatto) in Croatia. In these documents, one person named Zirno (son of the Prestanzo) donates the church of St. Mary to St. Stephen's Monastery. The document says: "Io Zirno, al presente priore di Spalato, figliolo dela bona memoria Prestanzo priore di Spalato".
