chris bouter says: it is possible that the name Bouter comes from the ancient Greek 'bouterion', which means 'butter'. unless evidence from old archives surfaces, it remains a question whether this surname hails down from the Greek or from a more recent 'butter' (Dutch 'boter'). there is also the French 'bouter' which means 'mettre' as in 'mettre le feu a une maison'. but since this name occurs mostly in the Netherlands, it is likely that it is cognate with the Dutch 'boter' (butter).
chris bouter says: A recent study of old archives shows that in my own genealogy in the 13th century there was a certain Wauter who lived in Vlaanderen (the Dutch speaking part of Belgium). A few generations later this name changes into Wauters and again later into Bauters and finaally to Bouter in the 16th century (who then lived in the Netherlands. Apparantly in pronunciation Wauter and Bouter are not far apart.
