Meaning of this name is unknown.

Knut Jensen says: First mentioned in a papal document of 1234 as de Buglom. This document is about the church on the estate of Byklum. Meaning of Byklum is not known as it is from ancient Norwegian. One suggestion is that it means "bent" as the small lake Bykil is located just below the property. This lake is curved. The "um" ending is commonly from heim (home), so the meaning would then be the home near the bent(water. Um endings in Norwegian and the fact that the origins of Byklum is ancient Norwegian suggests that the name is from between 200 and 500 after Christ. The commune of Bykle has it's name from the estate of Byklum. The family of Byklum has been called both Bykle and Byklum throughout the centuries were written documents survive.
