Daniel L Coberly says: See my book COBERLY CONNECTIONS Ch7 pg 127. The present-day, historic village of Coberley in the English Cotswolds is believed to be the origin of the Co-berly family surname. WE know clearly that the name Coberley is one of few names that predates the Norman invasion of 1066. surname is very ancient, and proved connected to the loca-tional place name of that village in England that continues to exist about four miles from Cheltenham, Glouchestershire, in the Cotswolds; the village of Coberley. The name is thus likely of pre-Saxon origin and is be-lieved to date not long after 600 AD as “Cuthbert's Ley” (Curthbert's clearing); later known as “Cubberslege”. A British dictionary defines Coberly as Culberlege, dating from 1086 AD (a Doomsday Book citation); a ‘Wood or clearing of a man called Cˆthbeorht’, and suggests that the personal name later added “leah”, “leigh” or ‘ley” and is related to the arrival of St. Cuthbert (see pgs. 98, 112, 134). Our exhaustive world search found many distinct but related spellings of what may well be the original name before the Norman Conquest: Kuðbjartsló, translated from Culberlege, an ancient Icelandic translation dating to around 1050: Coberley (Glos.); Kuðbjartsló. From Culberlege. ‘Wood or clearing of Cúthbeorth. The Old English prefix Cúth- (famous) in personal names is the etymological equivalent of the Icelandic adjective ‘kuður’, an obsolete variant of ‘kunnur’)”. Other interpretions that the name is of German origin related to a shoemaker, listed in an old Dictionary of Family Surnames is proven false.
