Thiagan De Cros says: The name De Croos originated from the southern tip of India whose main source of income about 650 years ago was pearl fishing. These people were rich and well to do. At that time they were Hindus. Just after this period these areas were overun violently by invading mongol hoards who commanded all pearl fisheries that with immediate effect they should hand over all pearls harvested to the mongol war lords who were in control of that region though the overall commanders were the Portuguese Governors. After a major sectarian conflict began due to a Mongol youth attacking a Pearl fishing youth while the latter was with his fiancee, the resulting conflict resulted in over 30 to 40,000 deaths of these peaceful pearl fishing community. When this young man who was originally attacked brought this to the attention of a young Portuguese naval officer whose father was an influential person. He reported back and said the Portuguese did not want to interfere in this local disturbance as there was an inter religious component and that the Portuguese could have helped if there were Christians involved. Subsequently this drove over 50,000 pearl fisher folk to be baptized into Christianity probably around 450 to 500 years ago. This immediately resulted in these folk taking Portuguese names such as De Croos, Fernando, Rodrigo, Soza, Mirando, Miral and so on. Later as pearl fishing diminished these new Christians now known as Barathas were now highly educated in Christian Schools and became the elite of the present Baratha communities wh migrated to mainly the North Western Coast of Sri Lanka - Ceylon in those days. Most of the above information is available on the web. Thank you.
