Meaning of this name is unknown.
Aileen Degri says: The surname comes from the District named Degri within the Waja part of Tangale-Waja,northern Nigeria. Degri is actually a hill in a beautiful hill terrain, surrounded by savannah and the village Putoki is situated at the base of the hill. But there is a story to it... Lord Frederick Lugard, British colonial administrator in the early 1900s carried out extensive mapping of northern Nigeria. I was told by my respected late husband Alhaji Jibril Aliyu Jamaji Degri that before the colonial survey, the hill had always been named Deri, but Lugard's officials mistakenly labelled the hill Degri and from then on it was known as Degri. Many people of Degri took the hill name as their surname and so it is passed down the generations. Be proud of this surname, it carries over a hundred years of history.
