Owen Dungworth says: Village of Dungworth near Sheffield
Graham Dungworth says: All Dungworths came from the village of Dungworth at the top of the Loxley valley in the vicinity of the Bradfield parish, upper and lower Bradfield(originally Kerickton). Hunter at the turn of the 20th century thought that the name was a corruption of Dinnington. There is a Mot and Bailey. He also mentioned that the folk of that name were turned out of the village in the 17th century; a consequence of their refusal to renounce catholicism. Many of them decamped down the valley in Loxley or Sheffield. I still have family in Loxley. The village of Loxley lies on Carboniferous coal measure outliers; the valley was famous in the 12th century for its production of crucible steel, cutlery and weapons. The first differentially tempered steel for dreadnoughts(battleships)were wrought in the Don valley; the place names of the Hood and Rodney are at the foot of the Loxley river. Many master cutlers of the Dungworth surname are found in the records of the Sheffield cutlery guild. Many of the steel workers fought in the ships of the Sheffield class and Hood warships. The village lies at the top of the Loxley( Greek sunny terrace flanking the river, an energy source for water mills. Above Dungworth is Tom Hill in the vicinity of Gibraltar Rock and Ug (ugly) Hill by On moor. Dunn, son of Gwertha were Celtic gods of the underworld, the original name neterkerrick of lower Bradfield. The earth god Geb of Egyptian extraction or God of the Earth Geb al Terre is in the vicinity of On moor, the ancient name of the city og heliopolis. Such names predate the Roman occupation of the area. Later the Danes occupied even the upper reaches of the Loxley;Ug Hill. An 1840's miming map of the Bradley region reveals many Celtic place names.
