Meaning of this name is unknown.
C Fillafer says: It's french - and can be translated to 'wire of iron' - in german - Eisendraht. The italian form is Fillaferro
Enrico Filaferro says: Hi. In Friuli Venezia Giulia (NE Italy), there is a brook, named Pontebbana, that since 1420 divided “Pontebba Veneta”, under the rule of Venetian Republic, from “Pontebba Imperiale” (then Pontafel), under Austro-Hungarian rule. Such partition ended in 1918 (1st WW). The whole area had forges, specialized in iron works. In 16th century a certain Giovanni was owner of a "fusinam a filaferro". This Latin formula means that he was a blacksmith producing iron wire. Very often in the past people got a nickname from their job, soon becoming a surname (just think the millions of Smith, Mason, Taylor, Weaver...). In the German speaking side that family name became Fillafer. Another possible origin of our family name could be the form “(af)fila ferro”, “honing/sharpening iron”. Best regards Enrico
