Meaning of this name is unknown.
Maria Khanian says: Hi,my mother`s maiden name was Freina. Her grandfather, Luigi di Freina, was born in Vigo di Fassa, a ladin community in the (now Italian) alpes, the Fassa Valley. The name "Freina" is Ladin. It is a very popular first name in the Philippines due to St. Josef Freina de Metz, a missionary born in a valley next to the Fassa - Valley. He lived an died in China. There is a homepage about him in German, Italian and Ladin, where the name is explained, too. Freina means cliff, or slope. I suppose the Freinas were peasants living on a slope in the Alpes. In Germany the only Freinas are the descendants of my Great-Grandfather or one of his two brothers, who emigrated to Bavaria in the 19.th century.
