Josy Ghartey says: Ghartey comes from the Efutu name Gakye which means lion. A chief of Winneba a member of the Fante Confederacy. The Fante Confederacy refers either to the loose alliance of the Fante states in existence at least since the sixteenth century, or it can refer to the short-lived Confederation formed in 1868 and dissolved in 1874. The Confederation is one of the first self-rule movements in Africa. King Ghartey IV (c. 1820-1897)[1] of Winneba was elected as the first King-President. The royal name Ghartey was originally Gakye but the British finding it difficult to pronounce, mis pronounced and misspelt it till it changed it to Ghartey sounds good I suppose and so it stuck. Every Ghartey in this world is a descendant of this single Fanti King whose name was changed from Gakye to Ghartey somewhere in the sixteenth century,but according to other sources eighteenth century when he and other Fanti chiefs were having confederacy meetings on self rule in the then Gold Coast, todays modern Ghana West Africa.
