greg gianas says: In my case, "Gianas" is a shortened version of Gianakopulos, a Greek name. My father changed the name when he was in WWII with Patton's Army in Europe because there was a Zanakopulous who was mistakingly getting my father's mail, or so my father told me. In Greek, Gianakopulos can be translated as John's son (Johnson). No doubt, some other Gianas will have a different story regarding the origin of the name "Gianas." That's the one I was given. You can laugh at this: My Greek grandfather, an immigrant from Greece, paid to bring some of his relatives to America. I can't say that they were appreciative. One of them told me that my grandfather and his brothers were bastards, born out of wedlock and were adopted by a Gianakopulos in Tegea, where my grandfather was born; and his real last name was Mandrakos. I traveled to Greece to learn the truth, and the truth appeared that his ungrateful relative, whose name I will not offer, is likely wrong and libelous; but who knows for sure? I don't. Could be there's something sacred about mysteries.
