Barrie Stephen Glassel says: September 15/2021. The family history as I have been told, is our relatives fled from Hungary during a revolution in the mid 1800's. They went North to Germany where they changed the family name to Glassel to hide their Hungarian identity. Then moved on to Sweden, where my Grandfather Thoré was born. Thoré & his brother Bert came to Canada in early 1900's, homesteaded land in central Saskatchewan close to the town of Unity. Thoré is my Grandfather. Thoré married Edith Knowles from England. He went to the Government offices in Saskatoon & picked a name from a book of eligible women to bring to Canada & marry. He paid her passage to Saskatoon, married & had 3 children. Ellen (Roy Kay), David (Marie), & Alfred (Leota Fern Lynn). My Dad is Alfred, born June 21 or 22 or 24,1922. Alfred & Fern had 4 sons, Barrie Stephen(Doreen Anderson), Edward Warren(Kathy Umphress)(3 daughters, Heidi, Kristin, Shawna) Garth Donald, & Stewart David(Karen)(1 daughter Alexis). There are many grandchildren.
Andreas Engström says: Hi Barrie, I'm a Swedish genealogist and a descendant of Thore Glassel's aunt Emma Maria Glassel. I'm afraid the family history you've heard is almost completely made up (by whom is anybody's guess). Thore's father Gustav Sigismund Glassell was born in Sweden, as was his father Herman Sigismund Glassell. HIS father, Sigismund Glassel was the one who immigrated to Sweden - he was born 1780-08-02 in Bratislava in what is now Slovakia. He came to Stockholm in Sweden in the beginning of the 19th century and established a silk factory, which made him fairly rich. He married a Swedish girl Stina Holmgren in 1811 and had 14! children with her.
