Meaning of this name is unknown.
Anthony Glise says: Original from Corsica, the name stems from lay persons who originally worked for the church ("Église") in Corsica and So. France. Sometime in the 16th century the "E" was dropped. Much of the family moved north to Cressbach (Black Forest Region in Germany) where the name took a German spelling ("Kleiß"). Some members took the ship, Goldenes Hind ("Golden Elk") from Rotterdam, Holland in the mid 19th century and landed in Philadelphia. After the first generation, the name was anglicized BACK to the French spelling of "Glise" (perhaps phonetically by chance), and the family scattered throughout the US thereafter.
