He was given lands in Northumbria at Chillingham and built the first Chillingham castle.Around 1306 the castle was attcked by the De Grey family and the De Hetons were killed except for a son and daughter who were smuggled out of the castle by their nursemaid over the border to Scotland. The boy prospered and established the family seat at Darnick near Melrose. Darnick Tower was built and is still owned by the Heiton Family.
