Meaning of this name is unknown.
Risto Kempas of East Prussia says: There are possibly two completely separate Kempas clans. The most populous is in Finland. The other is from East Prussia, where the oldest known member of the family is Muska Kempa (early 16th century). In 1803 the Kempa clan adopted the suffix S, due to Lithuanization of the East Prussian homeland. The East Prussian Kempas live in exile mostly in unified Germany. A few can be found in the U.S. and in Finland (where they are mistaken for the Finnish Kempas).
