Meaning of this name is unknown.
Carl Lexow says: Claus Josias v. Behr Writes in his Mecklenburgisches Adelschronik that Günther, Herr v. Werle und Treuherr zu Magdeburg, a Brother of fürst Johann II v. Werle, issues a Diploma in 1309 about a dispute between himself and the v. Lexow Family. The estate of Lexow was given in 1298 to the Kloster Malchow (near Müritz in Mecklenburg). The oldest person we know who is bearer of the name Lexow, is Hildebrand v. Lexow, born abt. 1275, and who was probably a Knight. The Family held several fiefs in the neighbourhood of Müritz at the time.
Carl Lexow says: Many placenames and subsequently, many family names in the northwestern parts of Germany (Mecklenburg, Prussia) ending on -ow, have a slavic origin. During the period of slavic migration (abt. 500 AD), when various slavic tribes settled in this area, such names became common, composed by the ending -ow which means "property belonging to" and a first name, f. inst. in the case of Lexow, "Leksa" or "Alexandre". Later, during the Middle Ages, people who held such properties as fiefs, where named accordingly and with a prefix (like the latin "de" or german "von", in English "of") between the first name and the name of the fief, which then gradually became a family name. Such families were mostly serving as knights, or similar. Families/persons mentionned or described as such in written documents prior to 1400 AD, are often called "miles" or "ministeriales" because of their knightly functions in peace and war and were bound to the ruler of the land as a kind of serf.
