Meaning of this name is unknown.

Charles Anthony Mphande says: The origins of the name Mphande are these: The largest group of settlers that travelled from the Congo Region to what is now called Malawi, was composed of different family clans including the Phiri, the Banda, the Chipeta, the Zimba and many other smaller ones. The whole group was roughly referred to as the Chewa (which was the largest language spoken among the many that were actually dialects or pidgins - Chitonga spoken in Malawi is a dialect of Chichewa). When they arrived in the region, the whole group first settled in what is now Nkhata-Bay West in Chief Kabunduli's area. When the first dispersion happened, the largest group moved to Mankhamba, somewhere between what are now the districts of Mangochi, Dedza and Salima. One small clan, however, decided to move what I would call a stone-throw-distance to the North of the original settlement near what is now Mzuzu - to the south of this urban village. This area had indigenous growing beads that looked like prisms. It's these beads that were originally called mphande, to distinguish them from the rest of the types of beads locally called mikanda. Mphandes (the beads) later came to be this clan's trade item which earned them the name Mphande. That's the origins of this our beautiful name.
