Johanna Pinky Mvula says: I want to know more about my surname meaning
Miss3V3LYN says: The name mvula is originally African and in full it is IMVULA and means rain |"I MVULA = THE RAIN". Thus a girl born on a rainy day her name would be "NO-MVULA or NOMVULA". Same way a boy would simply be MVULA. I am not sure how this name originated as a surname but my I once heard that a lot of families in the olden days used to change their surnames to something they fancied if they did not like their original surnames, especially if there were bitter feuds between relatives, or there was a bad history in that family, or if someone did not want to have anymore ties with his family for certain reasons. It is a common name especially in South Africa. Few people obviously have access to the internet in South Africa and Africa as a whole, that is a fact!
Ronnie Mvula says: The name is also found in Malawi, Zambia, Namibia and Zimbabwe. I guess it is because of the migration of the Ngonis of Tchaka Zulu from South Africa.
