John Pegan says: The name derives from the latin: pagan which originally referred to a villager or country "hick" or the equivalent of "redneck". The Family name therefore comes from several sources. One line - in USA, UK, Scotland and probably Canada and Australia probably derives primarily from the de Pagan family from the Champagne District in France. The de Pagan is a minor nobility line. Hughes de Pagan was a co-founder of the Knights Templars. He was from the Village of Pagan. Junior members of the de Pagan family followed the Normans into England, and served under Henry II as an intermediary in Scotland and subsequently settled there. From that line of descent, Pagans - later changed to Pegan spelling - immigrated to Canada and Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the mid-1700's. From that line - the family moved into various locations in what became the US - Ohio.Known locations from Ohio are Missouri, and then Pennsylvania, Idaho, and California. There is strong evidence that one junior male in the line of the de Pagan family during the Napoleonic Wars fought in Slovenia and eventually settled there. It is possible that the famous gymnast and the sailboat sportsman from Slovenia are descended from that line of the de Pagan family. The "PeGan" or Pagan lines from Sicily might have descended from the French de Pagan line that followed the Normans that conquered Naples and Sicily during the time the older brother was conquering England. However that line of descent is less clear. Given the Latin use of the name, other villagers in Latin speaking locations might have also received the name Pagan or Pegan or Payne or PaGan, etc.
