Kenneth Penaluna says: The name derives form a hamlet outside the ton of Veryan in Cornwall in the late 1300's and most likely means "the head of the ponds or lake"
Andrew Penaluna says: We have the family crest and it was presented to us by a Mr Endean Ivall of the Cornish Guild of Heralds in the late 70s. Pen means 'head' and as noted, the following can be loosely translated as over water or over ponds. The name also suggests 'distance' and has been translated as a headland where you can see near and far. This could match the headland near Veryan in Cornwall rather well.
Linda Coombs says: Hi I have used my Maiden name because my Dad Leslie Coombs his mum her surname was penaluna her name was Maud penaluna my family come from Plymouth Devon But dads family actually came from Dorset his dad was a royal marine based at stone house barracks serverd ww1
George Penaluna says: Penaluna is a Cornish name, originating in the Cornish language (Kernow) one of the celtic languages. Cornwall is now the most south westerly county in England. I understand 'Pen' is head or top and 'luna' is river or valley, so Penaluna is someone from the head of the valley.
Rachel Penaluna says: There are two of us in NZ - my son, Joe and myself. We moved out here from the UK in 2000. My dad always told me that we were descended from Spanish pirates who presumably washed up in Cornwall. I have no idea if there is any truth in that but it's a good story to tell in the pub!
