Neil Punnett says: My understanding is that the name derives from the French word for bridge "pont". The Punnetts first appeared in England at the time of the Norman invasion in 1066 and remained largely within Kent and Sussx until the 18th century. The village of Punnett's Town in Sussx preserves their name.
