Meaning of this name is unknown.
Nis Rattenborg says: The name has its origin in the german name Raten (counsellor) and can be followed back a priest of the Lutheran priest school in Leck (Nordfriesland) just after the Reformation. It was changed after the german wars by adding -borg (means castle - but is in this context it is both a translation of the german -burg and the name of a small place just north of the Waddensea city of Højer where some of the family lived at that time) - the purpose was to make the german name Ratenburg (the family name at the time !) danish ! because germans and german names was not well liked at the time ! = the family considered it self as danish.
