Meaning of this name is unknown.
David says: The name dates back to medieval Switzerland, first written mention being 1431, in the city of Baden (Ringysen, later Ringeysen). Further mentions during the 15th century appear in cities of Bern, Luzern, Basel and Schaffhausen. In almost every case the namebearer being a blacksmith. There are several theories on the name's origin: Ringisen in alemann dialect being a special type of horseshoe, and 'ring ysen' a specific ironware described in medieval script. However, some sources state, it was also a custom for guild member families to add 'eisen' to their surname. Thus names such as Zwingeisen, Brenneisen, Findeisen etc. were not uncommon in the area. By theory all namebearers could go back to a single unknown journeyman blacksmith of the 14th century. Modern day families of Alsace and Saarland are proven to be originated from Basel and Bern area in the 16th 17th centuries. However other German families could only be connected via y-dna results in the future.
