Anmol Singh Sarao says: Village - Babri, District - Shamli, Uttar Pradesh India
Deep kaleka Sarao says: Want to know about my family elders 1700
Deepinder Sarao says: My name is Deepinder Singh Sarao, now settled in Chandigarh after retiring from the Indian Army. I have two sons Karanvir Singh Sarao and Ramanvir Singh Sarao. My wife is Tejinder Kaur nee Sanghera. My father is Lt Col Harjinder Singh Sarao (90 years old now , born in village Mehraj : 1925) is originally from Sangrur, village Janal. A large part of his childhood , before he joined the Army, was spent with various relatives ( his fathers and mothers side) in Patiala, Manimajra and Saharanpur. His ancestral lands were in Janal which he sold off and later bought agricultural land near Chandigarh in the 70's. From what I can make out--- Sarao,Saraon,Sara,Kaleka are all the same. The geanology of Kaleke's/Sarao's, like in the case of most Punjabi Jatts, can be traced back to Bhatti Rajputs who came from Jaisalmer. Going back in time we come across one Chaudhari Kala of Khana, a Subhran zamindar of the village Kaleke, now in Sangrur district of the Punjab who had two sons and a daughter. Up the line there is a link of Sarao's/ Kaleka's with this. The daughter, Fattoh / Fateh Kaur (also popularly known as Mai Fatto was born at village Kaleke in 1702 and died at Patiala Fort in 1773. She was married to Ala Singh in 1711, the founder of Patiala state. Baba Ala, the founder of Patiala was thus married into the Kaleka clan. A story was told of Mai Fatto that, at her birth, her mother, disappointed at having a daughter when she had earnestly desired a son, put the new born child in an earthen vessel and buried it in the ground. A wandering mendicant of the name of Devi Dass, happening to pass and seeing the mother in tears, enquired the cause of her grief. She confessed to him what she had done, and the mendicant told her to disinter the child, for of her would be born a famous race, which should rule all the neighbouring country. The child was taken out of the ground unhurt, and eventually became the wife of Ala Singh, bearing him three sons, Sardul Singh, Bumian Singh, and Lal Singh, all of whom died in the life-time of their father, and a daughter, Bibi Pardhan, who was married to a zamindar of small consideration, and nothing is known of her descendants. Another Kaleka , who can be traced to these times is Gurbaksh Singh Kaleka, a military general of Ala Singh who helped him wrest 84 villages including Patiala sometime in 1752. Ala Singh managed his territory so successfully that his reputation spread far and wide. It was believed that he alone could ensure peace and prosperity to the peasantry. To that extent, one Chowdhary Bir Bhan of Sangehra village (near Barnala, Sangrur district), invited him and the entire village accepted his protection. Basically Sarao's are Punjabi Jatts and are landowners /farmers/tillers. Sarao, Sraw, Sra and Srao is also a Jaat (non Sikh) clan found in the Haryana , Punjab and Rajasthan regions. In Haryana , Sarao caste people are mainly in Yamunanagar, Ambala and in (Pehowa area ) Kaithal District. Certain Saroay, Sarai or Sara clans also sprang from Goraya Jatts. The great Akali Phoola Singh was a Saroay Jatt. In most societies surnames come from occupation, race, place of origin or past deeds of a famous ancestor . Punjabi Society is no different. Going backwards I have been able to trace the history of my family, from my fathers side, as follows--- (1) My father is Harjinder Singh Sarao. My mother is Kuldeep Kaur nee Kalkat. (2) My grandfather was Joginder Singh Sarao and my grandmother was Bhagwant Kaur ( nee Sidhu). (3) Joginder Singh Sarao's father was Sardar Bagga Singh (my great grandfather) who had served in 2 Lancers. His wifes name was Harnam Kaur. Bagga Singh and Harnam Kaur had four sons and one daughter : Balwinder Singh Sarao who became Maulvi Habibur Rehman later, Joginder Singh Sarao (my grandfather), Devinder Singh Sarao and Rajinder Singh Sarao. The daughters name was Mahender Kaur. (4) Bagga Singh's father was Sardar Harnam Singh (my great great grandfather) who had served in the Patiala State Forces. His wifes name is not known. (5) Harnam Singh's father was Sardar Khazan Singh (my great great great grandfather). The name of Khazan Singh's wife is not known . Khazan Singh had two brothers, Inder Singh and Mahender Singh. By a system of approximation , average life span of the times and logic, I have been able to guesstimate that Khazan Singh was probably born around 1810. I have not included the parallel family tree giving details of other kin- brothers, sisters, wives, second marriages etc to avoid confusion . Interestingly America, Phillipines , Mexico,Italy, Spain have 'Sarao's' (not from Indian/Punjabi stock). There are also ethnic Indian Christian Sarao's in India. Geni has a good tree line of many Sarao families . Sarao's from Sangrur (having been declared a backward area), are counted amongst 'backward' classes but are not counted in the SC/ST list. 'Sarao's ' of the World USA (30%) Philippines (29%) Italy (13%) India (11%) Great Britain (7%) Mexico (1%) South Korea (1%) Brazil (1%) Uzbekistan (1%) Burkina Faso (1%)
