Meaning of name Stanfield is: From the stony field

pablo stanfield says: Stanfield is an English surname related to the Norman gentry name "de Stansfield", derived from an estate on the Yorkshire/Lancashire border called Stansfield, which in Anglo-Saxon means Field of Stones. It is near Todmorden. The Stansfield family had marital ties to English royalty and nobility, and the main line of the family died out at the end of the 19th C. The internal "s" in Stansfield was often silent and many in the shirttail branches of the family stopped writing it. In North America, two branches of the family were established. The first, the Quakers, came to Philadelphia soon after Wm. Penn and the Quakers settled it, then moved to the first Quaker colonies in the new settlements of North Carolina, ca. 1700. Some of them joined the Quaker exodus to the NW Territories (OH, IN, IL) after 1810, when the NC government made it hard to be anti-slavery. The other branch, The Cavaliers, settled near Abbéville, SC, and owned plantations and slaves. Many of them kept the s in the middle of the name. Other variants of the name are Stanseld, Stanfell, Stanfill. The most common misspelling is Standfield.
