Meaning of this name is unknown.

Kan Tetsuji says: “Sugawara” means “heart of sedge.” On the 25th day of the sixth month, 781 A.D., Haji no Sukune Furuhito (750-819), son of Haji no Sukune Uniwa, Lieutenant Governor of Tōtōmi, a kuge (courtier) of junior fifth rank, lower grade, accompanied by fourteen other Haji clansmen, petitioned the newly enthroned (half Korean) Kammu Emperor to have the clan name changed to Sugawara, the place in Izumo in eastern Shimane-ken where the Haji clan was centered at the time. The petition recited the clan’s history to that point. The emperor granted the petition so that the first generation bearing the Sugawara name was that of Furuhito’s children. In turn, the Haji were descendants of Nomi no Sukune who killed Taima no Kehaya in unarmed combat before the Suinin Emperor, at his invitation at the Imperial Palace at Makimuku, Shiki-gun in 23 B.C. Sugawara have three Shinto gods in its lineage: Amenohohi o Mikoto, Nomi no Sukune and Sugawara no Michizane (845-902), the celebrated scholar, deified as Tenjin. Sugawara has been a clan of scholars since the 7th century to the present time, having been imperial tutors and professors of Chinese history for over a millennium. Branch families include the Suga and Kan (my forefathers).
