Meaning of this name is unknown.
Alan Learned says: The name Vomstein appears to have originated in Frankish-Swabia. Its literal Germanic meaning "From Stone" or "Of Stone" is similar in context to the French translation of the name, "De La Pierre". The etymology of the name is hinted at by the Germanic "Stein" and the French "Pierre" in that Pierre translates into English as "Peter". It may seem to have been an interpretation of a Catholic reference for "from Peter, the rock" (St. Peter), the founder of Christian Church in the Holy Roman Empire, denoting a Christian devotion to the saint. A genealogical tree traces the name to at least the year 1216 in Schwabia.
