Reinhard Winner says: Die westfälische Stadt Altena wird als Wiege der Drahtzieherei bezeichnet. Im Sauerland und auch im Bergischen Land wurden schon in frühester Zeit in Rennöfen u.a. Eisen gewonnen, welches hier in vielen Schmieden weiter verarbeitet wurde. Eine Art der Weiterverarbeitung war und ist hier die Drahtzieherei. Wenn der Draht zu dünnerem Draht gezogen wurde, so geschah das mittels einer Winde [Winne]. Der Mann, welcher die Winde bediente, wurde „Windler“ oder „Winner“ genannt. Der Name Winner ist im sauerländischen Bereich In der Drahtzieherei entstanden. Das ist zumindest mein überlieferter Wissensstand.
