Meaning of this name is unknown.

Kim Wedum says: The word "heim" is a common Norwegian word meaning "home". It is often used as an ending in names of places like e.g. the big mountain area in Norway called "Jotunheimen", which means "home of the Jotnes" (mountain troll). In the 1600-hundreds a small farm in the Gudbrandsdal valley in Norway was called "Vedheim", meaning "Wooden home". Under the Danish influence in the 1800-hundreds the typical "heim" ending was changed to "um" in many cases. The "um" ending is now a common part of many Norwegian names of places and cities like e.g. Bærum, Skaugum, Trandum, Hurum. In some cases the Danish influence also led to the letter "V" being exchanged for the letter "W", interestingly enough because "W" is a rare letter in the Norwegian alphabet. Hence, the name of farm, which was tiny, was changed from "Vedheim" to "Wedum". People were quite productive in the Gudbrandsdal valley, each family typically having 8-12 kids. But they were also very poor, so many had to move out to survive. Many left for UK and the US. The name "Vedum" is also used today. This is probably due to the fact that "W" is not considered a common letter in Norway.
